Systematic review

Answer in brief

A review that follows a written protocol to find, screen and appraise all studies on a narrow question.

What it means

A systematic review sets its question, search strategy, inclusion rules and quality checks before it starts. Two or more reviewers usually screen the titles and full texts, and the review reports what it excluded and why. The method exists to limit selection bias, so a reader can trust that the answer reflects the field and not the reviewer's choices.

AI can help with the mechanical parts, such as drafting search strings, sorting results or flagging likely matches. It should not decide inclusion alone, and its screening needs to be checked against human decisions. Journals and funders often publish their own rules for AI use, so read them before you start. Recording those decisions in advance makes the review easier to audit later. Keep a list of excluded studies with the reason for each.
