Elicit in Best AI for Research

Answer in brief

AI research assistant that finds papers, answers questions and extracts data into tables for literature reviews.

Best for

Systematic reviews and extracting structured data from many papers

Pricing

Basic is free and includes unlimited paper search, with limited Research Agent and report use. Pro is $49 a user a month or $588 a year, and Scale is $229 a user a month or $2,748 a year. The pricing page does not say whether the monthly rate differs from annual billing, and Enterprise is quoted.

What it covers

Elicit's support article says its search covers 138M+ academic papers and 545,000 clinical trials. That article does not name the underlying indexes.

Citations and verification

Reports are described as fully cited, and extracted values come with supporting quotes. An independent 2026 feasibility study found supporting quotes matched in only 46% of repeat extractions, so check them.

API

The API is in beta and needs a Pro plan or higher, and a 403 response means the plan lacks API access. Documentation is at https://docs.elicit.com and covers a search endpoint and asynchronous report generation.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths
  • Systematic review workflow screens up to 5,000 papers on Pro
  • Free Basic plan includes unlimited paper search
  • Extraction tables across many papers at once
Limitations
  • Repeat extractions matched supporting quotes in only 46% of cases
  • Complex tables and multi-arm studies prone to extraction errors
  • Searches are hard to document as reproducible strategies
