Source grounding

Answer in brief

Designing an AI answer so each claim links to a specific passage in a real source that supports it.

What it means

A grounded answer does more than list sources at the bottom. Each claim is tied to a passage, and the passage is checked against the claim. Some tools copy the matching text word for word from the page, so a reader can see the support without opening every link. Others only summarize, which is faster but harder to verify.

Grounding does not guarantee correctness. A source can be wrong, out of date or taken out of context. It does make errors easier to find. When you evaluate a tool, ask whether every figure links to a source, whether the link opens the right page, and whether the quoted text appears on that page. A tool that fails any of these checks should not be trusted with a claim that matters.
